You press K and nothing pauses. The arrows scroll the page instead of seeking, or F types an f into a box somewhere. YouTube's shortcuts haven't broken; something is catching the keys first, or the shortcut only works in certain conditions. Here are the usual causes, most common first.

1. You're typing in a box

If you last clicked the search box, a comment field or the live chat, your keystrokes are going there. YouTube leaves typing alone, which is right, but it means K becomes a letter in your comment. Click an empty part of the page, or the video itself, and try again.

2. Space is pressing a button

Space only plays and pauses while the player has focus. If you last clicked a button, such as Like, Subscribe or a player control, Space presses that button again. Anywhere else, it scrolls the page. The fix is a habit: pause with K, which works wherever you clicked last.

3. The shortcut needs something first

, and . step one frame only while the video is paused.
C only works if the video has captions, and +, −, O and W only while captions are on.
Shift + P only goes back within a playlist.
Ctrl + arrows (or Option + arrows) only jump if the video has chapters.
Shift + . and Shift + , are the > and < keys, so they need Shift. The plain full stop and comma are the frame-step keys.

4. You're on a Mac

Two shortcuts differ. The chapter jumps are Option + Left / Right, because Ctrl + Left / Right switches desktops in macOS and never reaches the browser. And if your keyboard has no Home and End keys, Fn + Left and Fn + Right do the same: jump to the start and near the end.

5. The video is embedded on another site

A YouTube player inside a blog post or a course page only hears the keyboard once you've clicked it. Even then, sites can switch its keyboard controls off entirely with a player setting (disablekb), and the embedded player officially supports a shorter list: play and pause, the arrow keys, J and L, F, M and the number keys. For everything else, open the video on YouTube.

6. An extension is taking the keys

Browser extensions that control video speed, add Vim-style keys or remap the keyboard can grab keys before YouTube sees them. To check, open the video in a private window: Chrome, Edge and Firefox leave most extensions off there unless you've allowed them. If the shortcuts work there, turn your extensions off one at a time to find the culprit.

Still not working?

Reload the page, which clears whatever state the player got into, and make sure the browser window itself is focused. Media keys are a separate case: they're handled by your computer and browser, so if another app or tab is playing sound, they may control that instead.
